Hoosier Daddy?!?

Another walking tour in the midwest city of Indianapolis. Monument Circle is at the heart of the city. Here you can find the Soldiers and Sailor Monument. Almost as tall as the Statue of Liberty, it is dedicated to veterans of the American Civil War up to the Spanish-American War.

With its Moorish arches, domes and tower, it is the Shriner organization’s largest temple.

Beautiful canal that runs through part of the city. You can rent a paddle boat and go up and down the canal.

American Legion Mall/Veterans Plaza

This is a beautiful area dedicated to soldiers of both World Wars. There are many statues and information plaques from locals who fought in the war, including letters from the soldiers to parents and journal entries as soldiers and nurses were living through the war.

Glick Peace Walk

A designated walking trail that is part of Indianapolis’ Cultural Trail. The Peace Walk is dedicated to what they call “luminaries,” such as Benjamin Franklin, Susan B. Anthony, Albert Einstein, and Booker T. Washington. Below is the section dedicated to the Wright Brothers.

USS Indianapolis Memorial

USS Indianapolis Memorial is dedicated to the worst naval disaster in US history. A Japanese submarine in the Philippine Sea torpedoed the USS Indianapolis sinking it in 12 minutes. There were almost 1,200 men aboard, and 300 were immediately lost at sea. The remaining men floated in waters infested with sharks for almost four days before they were noticed. Only 316 survived.

Brickyard Crossing Golf Course has four holes within the infield of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home of the Indy 500. This was way too cool for Scott to pass up so he played a round and had a great time. (No birdies were harmed in the playing of the round, unfortunately)

  1. You are now close to my old stomping grounds. I was born and raised 90 miles due west of Indy in Danville, IL.. Indianapolis was always a fun place to visit, especially during Memorial Day and The Indy 500. Indianapolis has grown so much in the past few years but still has solid midwestern values. Be sure to eat a pork tenderloin sandwich!

    1. We enjoyed our time there. Wish Covid wasn’t interfering with visiting some of the places we wanted to go. We did have a tenderloin sandwich and it was wonderful. Hope you guys are doing ok. Are you in the states or Mexico? We are heading to Texas if you are around let’s catch up.

  2. I really seeing the sights, especially the memorials. I am so excited and looking forward to seeing you guys. Love you,Glynda

  3. Did you get to see Stacey. She lives in the neighborhood next to the Speedway? It looks like you are going to some amazing place. I am enjoying the updates. Be safe

    1. No we didn’t get to see Stacey. I don’t have her contact information and she hasn’t reached out. So missed her this time. Glad you are enjoying our travels. Hope you guys are staying safe. I worry about you every time I watch the news.

  4. we have never been to that area….lots of beautiful monuments…great photos. It is wonderful that you are getting to have this time to see so many states and beautiful sites. We will be leaving Colorado next week heading back to Houston. I would love to stay here til Christmas but Ed is ready to get back to Houston. Safe travels

    1. Hi Sue. I think the area is worth the trip especially in a non Covid era. There are a lot of places we either can’t or don’t go due to Covid. Safe travels going back to Houston. We will be in Houston too, so maybe we can meet up. Take care.
