White Sands National Monument (Park)

Update: We were here prior to this monument being designated a national park in December 2019.

We began the new year heading east with a few stops in New Mexico. The White Sands National Monument was our initial focus but we found a few other places of interest to occupy our time as well.

New Mexico to Mexico

Pink – the store and restaurant all the American tourist come to for beautiful art and trinkets.
Do you like my sombrero?

The International Space Hall of Fame

Space craft and astronaut are to scale. You can see how little room there wast to move around.
Beam me up, Scotty.
Space outfit of the first astrochimp HAM. HAM is buried here as well.

Fun stop at the pistachio farms to taste pistachio wine and other sweet treats.

Alamogordo, NM has a perfect climate for growing pistachios. This is the largest pistachio in the world with the biggest nut.

White Sands National Monument

Unique place as you must check the missile schedule on-line to verify the park is open to the public. (A Missile range surrounds the park to the north and south).
Whee!! Head first down the white gypsum dunes.
We made the disks really slick with wax.
Coasting down the hill facing the Sacramento Mountains.
After the fun, the climb up the steep sand hill.
Many movies and commercials are filmed here. This picture shows why.
Sunset with the Sacramento Mountains in the background.
Undisturbed sand. Hard to believe this is New Mexico and not an exotic foreign land.
Yucca plant
Sunset over the San Andres Mountains.
Two jets streaking the sky as the sun sets.

  1. Wow these are some awesome photos. We have never been to this area and it looks so beautiful and so many interesting things there to visit. You will have so many wonderful memories. Take care and be well

  2. Love your photos, you sure know how to enjoy your trips! We have never been to your most recent stops and look forward to doing some of these when we finish our trips out of the country. Bob wants to see the national parks, I have never done some of them and would like to do that too.

    1. Thanks Becki. We really enjoy the parks, You and Bob would too. It’s hard to chose because international travel is so fun too. We are tentatively going to Arkansas for the Hot Springs around February if you want to join us.
