Yellowstone – Lamar Valley

One of the best scenic drives in the park is Lamar Valley. This area is in the north west part of the park and is the least visited. While tourist season was still in full swing, we wanted to explore an area that was less crowded and we are so glad we did.

The Lamar Valley has the richest diversity of landscape in the entire park.

Scientist believe that this petrified tree is 45 million years old. Anatomically it is no different than present day California Redwoods.

When we were researching Yellowstone National Park, we came across videos on youtube which showed people stuck in their cars as a herd of bison crossed the road around them. We talked about how awesome it would be to have that experience. While driving back across the park from the Lamar Valley, we saw a herd of bison in a field that seemed to be moving towards the road. We made a quick u-turn and pulled off in a roadside turnout. Watch the video below to see what happened next.

We sat in the car with the top down and it was like being in the middle of the herd. Dream come true!!!! That was a most amazing experience and one that we will not soon forget.

  1. Now those guys could do some serious damage. I know it was great seeing so many of them there crossing the road BUT
I don’t think I would have been standing where you were. lol You got some great photos and great footage.

    1. It was kind scary to be right there. I thought for sure one of them would look into the car and scrape by. Fortunately, they stayed a respectful distance from the car, but it was too close for comfort some of the time. Glad you liked the video. We have been experimenting with video and using it more in the blog.
